Outstanding service on Media City

After a grueling supplier selection process, I & M were chosen by NG Bailey to supply the PDUs and STS units to power the studios in this exciting new waterfront development and are pleased to announce successful completion of the almost £1.0 million project.

The BBC will move around 2,500 staff to MediaCityUK, which will involve relocating five London-based departments, along with all local and network broadcasting currently operating out of Manchester city centre.

Centred around a waterfront public realm area twice the size of London’s Trafalgar Square, MediaCityUK will be a destination in its own right, complete with bars, cafés and restaurants. The development’s piazza has been designed to accommodate large-scale events for up to 9,000 people, making it a natural focal point both day and night.

I&M shine in TV Spotlight
I
&M Controls were featured on yesterday’s BBC1 Politics Show.  The programme examined the way in which I&M have developed a workforce who - in some cases - have no formal qualifications into a team that have helped underpin the business’ success over recent years.  I&M are committed to investing in the development of their entire workforce, from the youngest apprentice to their most senior worker.  The company has designed a targeted programme of national vocational qualifications (NVQs) that has proved invaluable not only in improving business efficiency and customer focus, but also in motivating the entire team.  The bottom line – quite literally - has been an improvement in the company’s bottom line; a significant growth in sales, delivery and profit that have helped underpin their position as benchmark panel manufacturers.

More ministerial praise for I&M Controls...
I&M Controls today hosted a fact-finding visit by Ian Austin MP, the Regional Minister for the West Midlands.  The visit, at the request of the West Midlands Learning and Skills Council, was designed to showcase I&M’s innovative approach to skills development, part of an initiative that has helped produce impressive improvements in manufacturing productivity and efficiency. Commenting on the role of training and new skills acquisition in protecting the success of smaller businesses, the Regional Minister praised the way in which I&M Controls is building for its future by developing its enthusiastic workforce, adding that “I&M Controls is an excellent example of the sort of business success that we are determined to support”.

Government praise for I&M Controls
Government Minister Liam Byrne MP took time to review the success of I&M's strategy for involving, training and developing its workforce. Led by Operations Director Nicola Kirkley, the initiative is credited with achieving productivity improvements, reducing costs and further refining the acknowledged quality of the company's products. The strategy - which started as an initiative but has now become business as usual - has also led to a sharp upturn in morale within the company. Commenting on what he saw, the Minister praised the commitment with which senior management had created their bespoke programme and the enthusiasm with which the workforce have embraced the changes.

I&M install first DC PDUs for Tiscali
Growing demand for their services led Tiscali to expand their midlands data handling capabilities. The project called for a new range of metered 48V DC Power Distribution Units (intended to reduce overall dataroom power consumption and minimise new facility costs). In addition, Tiscali required a number of intelligent PDUs to manage ongoing AC distribution requirements at the facility. Against stiff competition, I&M won both orders.

SmartPDUs in Slough
I&M have completed the installation of another smartPDU project in a large west Datacentre to the west of London. The installation - for a confidential multinational datacentre client - provides fully metered, remotely monitored power distribution to a total of 1440 outgoing ways across three separate datarooms. The PDUs are protected by an array of 8 I&M isolation transformers to help eliminate harmonic disturbances from other sources within the datacentre.

Healthier distribution for Charing Cross Hospital
I&M Controls are at the heart of efforts to improve power distribution at London’s Charing Cross Hospital. Rather than simply replace existing switchboards, I&M delivered a programme of updates that modernised existing switchboard panels. Apart from total-cost benefits, this approach reduced the inevitable disruption that results from a full switchboard replacement programme. Thanks to careful design and I&M's hallmark attention to detail, the reworked switchboards are able to provide the same efficiency and response benefits that would have resulted from a complete new switchboard.

Helping Imperial College NHS trust focus on patient problems
The new high-definition Siemens Positron Emission Tomography (PET) scanner – for Imperial College NHS Trust’s Charing Cross hospital – offers consistently sharper and more clearly defined images across the entire field of view. This permits staff to provide more accurate early diagnosis and support better targeted treatment than previous generation scanners.

The decision to house the state of the art scanner in an existing building placed critical constraints on the package size of the system’s sophisticated control system. I&M’s in-depth engineering capability, their proven ability to manufacture high-quality enclosures to Siemens’ exacting OE standards and their track record of delivering innovative custom panel configurations meant they were the obvious choice to design, manufacture and install the new system.

I&M help expand Virgin Media’s data handling capabilities
I&M have successfully won the contract to manufacture and install new Power Distribution Units in two of Virgin’s large datacentres. Working with WF Electrical, I&M will supply a range of standard 72 and 144 way PDUs to help expand Virgin’s existing data handling capacity.

Dragon Steel
I&M have secured the order to supply Blast Furnace blowers for Asian steel producer Dragon Steel. The Sivacon MCCs will control the blower's twin fan arrangement of Siemens motors, starters and drives with a total electrical value in excess of £1.25m. The blowers are used to supply pre-heated air to the furnace to improve the efficiency of the ore to steel conversion process.

I&M help Deutsche Bank make their Mark
I&M are helping Deutsche Bank make their mark in the City thanks to their contract to supply critical equipment for new datafloors being created during the refurbishment of one of their larger City of London facilities. Constraints of the existing building meant the installation needed to be very compact, while the bank’s schedule also demanded very short leadtimes. I&M’s ingenious, modular Fastech192 switchboard construction system helped achieve both objectives, offering high packing densities and very fast build times. In addition to 4 off 800Amp UPS boards and 8 PDUs, the project required a further 38 boards and the installation of related busbars. Thanks to the Fastech192 system’s flexibility, panel installation had commenced within 5 weeks of the date of order.
